TV Series To Binge In 2020

Get the popcorn poppin'!

Despite being an overall challenging year, 2019 gave us some of the best television series to ever grace the small screen. There's Natasha Lyonne's sleeper hit Russian Doll that gave a fresh spin to a classic plot. Another pleaser is Fleabag's second season which proved to be even better than the show's first instalment. Even in the teen show department, there have been a few standout gems such as Euphoria. Here in Asia, favourites like Hotel del Luna and Kingdom gained enormous popularity. It was also the year when we had to say goodbye to long-time treasured shows, the most notable one being Game Of Thrones.

The good news is, 2020 is also shaping up to be an equally promising year. Ahead, a list of binge-worthy television series that await us this year.

Here's your first look at Normal People!

If you're a bookworm, chances are you've encountered Sally Rooney's bestselling novel about will-they-or-won't-they couple Connell and Marianne. In high school, Connell is the popular jock while Marianne is the awkward loner. But in college, the roles switched and Marianne suddenly became the belle of the ball. Connell, on the other hand, now uncertain of himself, becomes a wallflower. Although this romantic plot has been done before, what endeared Rooney's readers are the complex storylines involving social class and family complications. With the slated release of a 12-episode drama depicting the exciting story of the two leads, longtime and soon-to-be fans can now watch the budding romance come to life. It will premiere on BBC Three and Hulu (international).

Katy Keene

If there's anything we learned after watching the second season of You, it's that you shouldn't discount a show just because it's made by the same makers as the Jingle Jangle-fueled Riverdale. After watching the trailer, you may think that Katy Keene is set in the past with all its vintage-like elements but the show actually takes place in the future — a few years after the events in Riverdale. This means that the characters are now all grown up, so expect some cameos and a peek into the future of Archie and the gang. Lead star Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars fame will play the titular Katy Keene who has ambitions to become the next big Broadway star. Aside from the plot, we're looking forward to all the stylish outfits! As of now, there's no word yet on where the show will stream.

We're not sure if you noticed, but Netflix is kind of obsessed with vampire shows lately. Think V Wars is lacklustre? No worries, we've got another vampy series on the way. Coming this January, Dracula will explore the origin story of the most iconic vampire in history. It will be set in Eastern Europe and will include confrontations with Van Helsing's descendants. Get ready for some spooks.

Lizzie McGuire

Out of all the comebacks this year, we're most excited about Lizzie McGuire's. For us, this is what dreams are made of! The iconic tween character is now coming back to continue her quirky and super relatable adventures. Now in her 30s, we get to see how Lizzie McGuire navigates the adult life. We hate to break it to you, but in 2020, Lizzie and Gordo are still not together. Despite this, we're still 100 per cent invested in this comeback and hope that it's as awesome (if not better) as the original we loved. The new episodes will stream on Disney+.

House of the Dragon

It's been a hot minute since Game of Thrones aired its final episode and fans are already hungry for another epic tale from the land of Westeros. Well, it's time to rejoice as HBO has finally announced the release of a prequel series based on George R. R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood. House of the Dragon will depict the events that happened 300 hundred years before Game of Thrones and will centre around the Targaryen House in its heyday. Details are still sparse but don't expect Daenerys Targaryen to make an appearance because she's still not alive in this era.
