Living in the tropics has its perks but it is undeniably a bummer that we aren’t blessed with more seasons other than the perpetual summer we have over here. Witness something different by flying this season. Because temperatures are starting to drop in countries up the latitude, there’s no better time to travel. Warm colours are starting to emerge as the foliage adjusts for the cool fall. Have a glimpse of what it’s like living during one of the most enchanting seasons by visiting these spots to see mesmerising fall colours.
Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Tohoku, Japan
It’s not difficult to find a spot where you can view breath-taking fall foliage in Japan’s famous cities. Still, if you want to enjoy it peacefully, it’s best you go straight to Towada-Hachimantai National Park in the Tohoku region. The mountainous area that stretches across Aomori, Akita, and Iwate Prefectures is filled with forests that become fiery red during this season. Enjoy the fall colours in the area when it peaks from early to late October. While you’re at it, take a relaxing dip in one of the region’s rustic hot springs or enjoy the mesmerising landscapes by hiking.
Nami Island, Chuncheon, South Korea
If you’ve been a fan of K-Dramas since time immemorial, then you’ll probably recognise this destination from the scenes of Winter Sonata. Aside from being a famous filming location, Nami Island is also a popular spot to view the fall foliage in Asia. Thanks to the ginkgo trees that tower over the pathways, the tiny crescent-shaped island bursts with life during this season. Marvel in a golden wonderland by riding a bike. Don’t forget to capture your memories and make the most out of your trip by taking snaps for the ‘Gram while you’re there.
Fushoushan Farm, Taichung, Taiwan
If you’re heading to Taiwan for the next couple of weeks, do include Fragrant Hills Park in your itinerary. Catch glorious autumn foliage courtesy of crimson maple trees amidst a pleasant pastoral scene that sits amidst lush mountain ranges. Because the farm sits on a high-altitude environment, you can also find a tea factory in this spot. But before all that, make sure to check out the “Three Kings of Fushoushan”, what they call the pear, apple, and peach trees in front of the Farm Office that ripen and give more colour during this season.
Fragrant Hills Park, Beijing, China
Visit the park dotted with maple, smoke, and persimmon trees that become a fiery sight during fall. One of the "Three Hills and Five Gardens of Beijing", Fragrant Hills Park has a historical and royal past dating back to Emperor Qianlong’s reign during the Qing dynasty. Inside the park, you’ll also find attractions such as Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Twin Pools Villa where Mao Zedong once lived. Have a spectacular bird’s eye view of the fall foliage by riding the cable car to the park’s highest peak. If you want a multi-sensory experience, opt to cycle up the hill instead and enjoy the sweet fragrance of the hill’s apricot blossoms.
Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam
Didn’t think you’ll find a spectacular spot to view fall colours in the Southeast Asian region? Well, surprise! The cool climate of Hanoi during this season makes for an optimum location for fall foliage to grow. Walk by the gentle waters of Hoan Kiem Lake and be enchanted by rustic shades of the famous freshwater mangrove tree that towers over the landscape. A stroll through this serene scene will give you a quick rest from the exciting chaos of the city.
