This season, a trend from the past has once again reared its familiar head on the runways: the square-toed shoe. Popularised in the ‘90s when it made its big debut in one of Tom Ford’s Gucci shows, the square-toed shoe enjoyed a bit of buzz due to their comfort and interesting geometric appeal. The average human foot is more squared-off than rounded or pointed, and this particular style gives the feet ample room to breathe. It’s not without controversy, however, as some have touted the trend as unflattering and even downright hideous.
Nevertheless, the square-toed shoe is back and here to stay for the meantime, running the gamut from high fashion to high street, as seen at Balenciaga with an update on the classic black ankle boots, and Topshop with different versions of the style in pump or sandal form. After the past season’s obsession with pointy-toed heels, we think our toes could stand to heave a sigh of relief. Here are our picks if you’d like to hop on to this trend.
