Review: Did The Gucci Mascara L’Obscur Live Up To Our Expectations?

Fluttery lashes all day long

Gucci Beauty gave beauty lovers worldwide an eye-opening (pun intended) surprise when the brand revealed its newest product after its line of lipsticks and perfumes: the Mascara L’Obscur. Good mascaras can be found anywhere — drugstores, anyone? — so we wanted to see just how the very first mascara from Gucci would hold up. A whirl and a few HIIT workouts later, #TeamClozette Community Manager and resident HIIT junkie, Sabrina Wong, shares her honest review.

First Impressions

"It's luxury in a tube" is how Sabrina would describe her first impression of the mascara's sleek and glamorous packaging, which comes in an opulent champagne-pink casing. “The overall aesthetics of the product is something that you would want to keep, even after its contents have been used up,” she shares.

The mascara wand features a pointed tip, which is designed to catch the shortest, most stubborn lashes for added length and separation. It also features a flexible elastomer brush, which promises ease of application. With an emphasis on length and definition in its claims, would the mascara be able to deliver the lift and curl that Sabrina — with her pin-straight eyelashes that droop downwards, a common hassle among Asian women — prefers?

Contents and Application

Sabrina was worried that the mascara’s formula would weigh down her lashes, as the brush dispensed a lot of product with one application. However, she was pleasantly surprised when it didn’t feel heavy even after applying several coats.

While the mascara required a little extra help from an eyelash curler for her desired ultra-curl lash look, Sabrina enjoyed the appearance of length and separation that the mascara promises to deliver. Its soft, easy-to-manipulate bristles defined her lower lashes evenly without clumping up, and its pigmented intense black formula did an impressive job in accentuating the eyes.

From a single mascara, Sabrina was able to achieve two looks: a classic style and a bold look. A regular horizontal wiggling of the wand created a "thick-but-not-voluminous" everyday lash look while positioning the wand vertically gave a more dramatic form to her lashes.

If you’re wondering how long the mascara can last — it claims to last for as long as 12 hours — Sabrina says it stays on the whole day without a single flake or smudge in sight. “I even left it on during my gym session and came out of the gym looking flawless despite being drenched in sweat. I tried the same routine for two days and on both days, the mascara did not budge,” she muses.

Final Thoughts

The verdict: it really lasts the whole day.

At the end of the testing period, the Gucci Beauty Mascara L'Obscur lived up to Sabrina's expectations. The packaging feels expensive and appropriate for a brand of its calibre. While Sabrina prefers a curved mascara brush, she appreciates the L'Obscur's soft bristles that made for effortless application. Furthermore, the mascara is smudge-proof and long-lasting, perfect for our humid weather. If you have naturally dense and curly lashes, the Gucci Beauty Mascara L'Obsur could absolutely be your next makeup indulgence.
