While one can challenge that there are many types of confidence-boosting methods, we can all agree that dressing up is one of them. There are studies that show that what you wear can affect your emotions as well as the way you interact with your surroundings.

Here, we believe in the power of dressing your best. And so I sat down with two #TeamClozette members — Creative Director, Kersie Koh and Regional Business Manager, Winson Huang — for a discussion on how our outfits, and the accessories that come with them, can be our ultimate tool of self-empowerment.

Becks (B): Some people think of dressing up as pretentious. What do you have to say to that?

Kersie (K): I hate to be caught over- or under-dressed. I think dressing up is a form of courtesy, plus it’s really just a fun thing to indulge in.

B: On top of it being fun, dressing up is also a form of self-branding. How is that pretentious if doing so can help portray you in your own individualistic way, right?

Winson (W): Unless you’re dressed in a pair of winter boots and a down jacket in Singapore, I’d say dressing up is more about dressing right and with respect for the occasion.

B: What’s your confidence-boosting outfit?

W: It usually consists of basics, like a pair of well-fitted jeans matched with a tee-shirt and accessorised with a statement piece. This statement piece could be a jacket, a flashy pair of shoes, or — my recent favourite — my Bolon Eyewear sunglasses I got from the Bolon store at Wisma Atria, Singapore.

The idea is to keep to just one go focal point so the overall look is balanced out. I like the colour of the lenses from this Bolon pair. It instantly ramps up the style factor when paired with, say, a white tee and denim jeans. When you look good, you feel good — and vice versa.

B: It’s the little things that often go unnoticed but make a big difference. Accessorising is a big thing for me, too, and these rose-tinted sunglasses from Bolon are working for me this season. It’s not only on-trend but it also features impact-resistance lenses that block out UVA, UVB and UVC rays. My confidence-boosting outfit is anything that is well-made and properly fitted to my body proportions. An ill-fitted piece can ruin a look as soon as you put it on.

K: It’s important to know your body type well and have a good understanding of what works for your personality and environment. I have an easy way about dressing and feel most comfortable when I look smart. At formal meetings, I often find myself in form-fitting bottoms and a chic top. I have a small frame, so being in a good pair of heels always gives me that extra confidence boost.

I've recently started wearing reading glasses. Determined to not let that make me feel “old”, I set out to look for a stylish pair. I felt I could identify with a timeless and classic style, and thanks to Bolon’s extensive array of styles, I found a pair which I love — stylish and smart.

B: Dressing well makes me feel beautiful, confident and strong. Like what American inspirational speaker, Regina Brett, said: “No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.” Dressing up is my secret weapon to tell the world that I am ready to take on the day. It’s my expression of self-love.

K: In our line of work, feeling good definitely keeps our spirits up and our creative juices flowing.

B: How does your dressing affect your attitude and confidence?

K: More than just dressing up, I think it’s important to keep your mind and body fit and strong. Lastly, it’s also about knowing what makes you feel good. I feel lousy when I start to gain around the waistline and feel uncomfortable in my pants, so I work hard to maintain my shape.

W: Dressing up really plays with my confidence level. On days when I’m dressed down and I happen to bump into a crush, a client or a friend I haven’t met in a while, I typically shy away from any form of contact because I don’t feel as confident. On the other hand, when I’m dressed up, I tend to be more sociable and confident. You know what they say: “Always be prepared. You’ll never know who you’ll meet.”

Whether you're going on a date or spending the night with your gals, Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to bring out the most glam version of you. You can't deny that pampering yourself for the occasion gives you a boost of confidence like no other. So prepare for V-day as early as now to make sure that you're ready for the loveliest night of the year. Your hair, makeup, and outfit may be all set, but you may be forgetting these equally important steps in your beauty prep.

Pick a sensual fragrance

Maison Francis Kurkdjian A La Rose Scented Hair Mist, SGD100 (70ml)

Set the romantic mood by wearing a sensual fragrance, not just on your body but also on your hair. If you don't know which scent to pick, perfumes infused with floral notes never fail. Rose scents are a particular favourite during Valentine's because of their fresh and seductive scent.

Achieve smooth, hair-free skin

Philips Satinelle Prestige Wet & Dry Epilator BRE652/00, SGD209

If you prefer having hair-free skin for V-Day, your options include booking a waxing session or using mechanical ways like epilators and shaving. Since waxing may take some downtime, shaving or using epilators are your best bets for last-minute preps. That being said, it's also totally okay to just let your hair be. It's just a matter of choice.

Hydrate your skin

Bio-Bounce Collagen Essence Cream, SGD36.90 (50g)

A good moisturiser is always a must no matter the occasion. For that extra bouncy skin, you can try collagen-infused essence creams to replenish skin's hydration. Don't just slather cream on the face, give your décolletage some lovin' too!

Get a mani-pedi

This year's Valentine's day falls in the middle of a busy working week, so it's gonna be really tempting to skip the little things in your prep. However, think about the impression you'd leave if you showed up with dirty nails, with chipped polished and jagged edges. Not so good, right? You don't have to do a fancy French manicure, just a little trim and a fresh coat of plain polish are already enough.
