Leading a healthier and fitter lifestyle requires commitment — and, truth be told, it's a road that many are not so eager to tread. There are many misconceptions about getting fit that hinders people from pursuing the lifestyle. So we sought the help of renowned fitness and nutrition expert Mark Macdonald, the founder of Venice Nutrition and International Board of Nutrition and Fitness Coaching, to shed some light on fitness and how you can kickstart your own journey to becoming healthier.

What's the worst misconception people have about eating healthy?


The biggest misconception is that people think they need to eat less and restrict their food intake. It’s never about eating less or depriving yourself, it’s always about learning how to balance your meals and favourite foods to stabilise your blood sugar. This way of eating creates balance in your body and ignites your metabolism.


What is the most common thing people do that sabotage their way to becoming healthier?


They go all-in instead of pacing themselves. Motivation only lasts for a moment in time. When you put the rest of your life on hold to get healthy, you’ll achieve temporary results and then life will push back and all your progress will be lost. The key is to start your health journey with a solid plan and strong mindset. Focus on 1% daily progress, this way you will be moving forward every day.


What simple steps can one take in order to become healthier and fitter?


There are three simple steps. First, shift your mindset to 1%. Focus on daily health improvements, like walking two more minutes a day, sleeping three more minutes at night or drinking a protein shake in the mid-afternoon. Minor health steps each day when compounded will change your metabolism and evolve into a healthy lifestyle.



Second, focus on eating a balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates every three hours to stabilise your blood sugar. Instead of using nutrition to lose weight, use it to create hormonal balance in your body. Our Zen Project 8 program is designed around eating PFC (Protein, Fat & Carbohydrates). By eating this way, it ignites your metabolism, builds muscle and triggers your body to burn body fat. It’s also how entire families can eat.

Third, keep your exercise and activity fun. Your mindset prepares you to win, your food plan creates the foundation, and your exercise builds your muscle and burns your fat. But anything you do that’s not fun will not last long. Choose activities or sports you enjoy, and make sure your activity is fun and something you look forward to doing.



If a person only has 15 minutes in their day to focus on fitness, how do you recommend they spend it?


It depends on their current fitness level. If they are just getting started with exercise, just start walking 15 minutes a day to help get your body active.

If you are already fit or you are ready for the next step in those 15 minutes, focus on doing HIIT training, which is high-intensity cardio training, where you can do one minute of intense cardio like sprinting, running stairs, jumping rope, followed by one minute of recovery and then repeat.

Then when you are at a strong fitness level, start alternating between strength training that focuses on your core movements, like planks, push ups, pull ups, squats and then the other day do HIIT training. The key is to always pace yourself and start where you are comfortable and stay consistent.



What’s the easiest way to form a fitness and wellness habit?


There is no "easy way" when it comes to your health. Just like with being married, raising kids or building a business, it all takes work. However, the payoff you get from each of those things is worth every ounce of effort. Your health is no different. To win with your health, you need to pace yourself and stay consistent. You will have moments when you fall off plan, no worries, your success is always determined by how quickly you get back on track.



What little things can a person do while at work to ensure that they’re still keeping their bodies healthy?


There are four main things: Bring your MRFK. I call it a Mobile Readiness Food Kit, basically your favourite protein, fats and carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar balanced throughout the day. This will prevent you from overeating at lunch and craving sugar during those mid-afternoon work crashes.


Use a ball instead of a chair. You burn three times more calories and strengthen your core by sitting on an inflatable ball instead of a chair at work. This will let you optimise your results and strengthen your body at the same time.


Do 60-second bursts every hour. Whether it's doing 60 seconds of stretching, or doing squats or maybe running in place, just commit 60 seconds of activity every hour to get your blood flowing and body active.


Drink your water. Your body needs water to maximise your results. Make sure you bring a bottle to work and drink at least two litres throughout the day.

Like anything else in life, fashion has its highs and lows. From trends that will never go out of style to fads that will simply have your eyes rolling as soon as you hear about them, one might think that we've exhausted everything about the industry. But Balenciaga comes in to break the notion. 


The French couture house is now under fire for a recently released pink airbrushed hoodie that costs a whopping USD895. The fashion piece, which has the New York City skyline print, is described by the Balenciaga as a "whimsical top" that is "cut with the French label's signature cocoon silhouette".

But its ridiculous price tag isn't the only reason why people are reacting very negatively about the product. Airbrushing shirts has its roots from black and brown communities during the '60s, '70s, and '80s. What started out as graffitis on street walls and designs on hot rod cars became part of mainstream culture and has even been massively associated with hip-hop, especially because of icons like LL Cool Jay and Jay Master Jay. And even so, it was easily accessible, both in terms of availability and price-wise, to the majority of the people simply because of its humble beginnings.


People didn't hold back their opinions about why they're not buying this 'gimmick'.

Balenciaga has yet to comment on the issue, but it's not the first time for a brand to release a ridiculous product that became food for the internet's entertainment. 


Just a couple of months ago, Topshop's Clear Knee Mom Jeans earned the title 'Ugliest Pants In The World' from many publications, which asked who thought it was a great idea to put plastic panels on the knee areas for fun? The piece itself is not exactly as ugly as everyone claims it to be, but it will still get you thinking "why?" Surprisingly, though, it's all sold out!

Then there are the Ugg sandals, the love-child of Uggs and Teva's brand collaboration. The former's signature boot design was meshed with the latter's classic fur-lined sandals, resulting to something that makes you look like you broke your foot and got a cast on for a week. Again, people made sure they shared their two cents about the footwear via Twitter.

But nothing tops the USD280 tube scarf from Bulgarian brand Dukyana. The knitted fashion piece, which weighs 210 lbs, was labelled 'sock dress' by the internet. Once you wear it, you'll never know where it begins and ends. It's armless, sheds, and just heavy!
