Fun Facts About Kelsey Merritt, The First Filipina To Walk The VS Fashion Show | Clozette

We all know that one of the most anticipated fashion shows in the industry is from the lingerie brand Victoria's Secret. Even if it's not as high fashion as the lineup at NYFW, PFW, and MFW, it made a name for itself through outrageous themes and costumes, and live pop music blazing. The spectacle has made the title of a VS Angel an aspiration for some in the modelling industry.

While there are still inclusivity issues when it comes to who walks the VS runway, there are some things about this colourful event that gives us good reason to celebrate. Meet Kelsey Merritt, the first Filipina to earn "Angel Wings" a.k.a. who got cast as one of the models who will walk in the brand's runway show this year.

The 21-year-old graduated just over a year ago from Ateneo De Manila University with a degree in Communications. Since then, she has moved to New York and has been busy with several international projects and have signed with multiple agencies. She has already participated in several ads for the lingerie brand this year but it's still different business when you find out that you're walking the runway.

Did this get you rooting for this stunner? We're sharing more reasons to love her below.

She may not look 100% Filipina but she's a Pinay through and through

The opening statement of her Instagram post announcing her being cast in the VS show is "We did it, Philippines!" But being Filipino-American, it's obvious that some of Kelsey's features are Eurocentric, and it caused a bit of controversy with regard to her being celebrated as a Filipina walking the VS show. She was quick to clap back on Twitter, saying she was born and raised in Pampanga (a Philippine province) and she even finished her degree in a university in Manila. She added that she only went to live in the U.S. after her graduation. She claims to be a more pure-blooded Filipina than those who have both Filipino parents but have never stepped foot in the country. She added, "I love my country and I'm proud of where I'm from."

She loves promoting body positivity on her Instagram

One might say that a body-positive message coming from someone who seems like she has an ideal figure is nonsensical, but Kelsey proves this statement wrong. Being a beach babe who constantly posts bikini photos, she doesn't mind showing her stretch marks to show that body positivity can come and should be accepted in all forms and sizes, no matter how "ideal" you might think someone is.

She's a massive pop culture fangirl just like the rest of us

As a model, you get to work with designers, personalities, and even celebrities. But that doesn't stop Kelsey from geeking out when the situation calls for it. Aside from posting adorable snaps of herself at Harry Potter World in Universal Studios Orlando and Disneyland, she also doesn't let an opportunity to ask a celeb for a photo pass. Just check out her cute pic, complete with a fangirl smile, with Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard.

Her Instagram profile provides amazing travel style inspo

Not sure how to ace the airport chic look? How about an OOTD shot when you check out of your hotel? As an avid traveller and a model who has to work on multiple international projects, Kelsey's Instagram is packed with gorgeous travel ensembles from her own trips that you can definitely try to cop. Plus, you can even try to make your own version of her effortlessly elegant yet uncomplicated poses.

We all have days when we already put on an outfit but it just feels like it's not looking right. Whether it's showing off curves that we don't want to be accentuated or it's our confidence that is just not playing to our advantage, there are surefire ways to remedy an unflattering outfit. Ahead, we give you our top stylish tips on acing any look with confidence.

Wide-legged pants give the illusion of slimmer and longer legs

If you’ve always been envious of model Miranda Kerr’s long and toned gams, you are not alone. Balancing out your torso to your heavy thighs does not get solved without exercise, but by wearing a mid-rise to high-waist pair of wide-leg pants, you elongate and balance out your legs. Wearing heels or wedges with this look won’t hurt for added height.

Minimise your bust with a draped dress

Being blessed with “assets” that many women envy is not always an advantage. Clothes tend to not fit your proportions well, making it hard to come up with an outfit that complements your body shape. Given this, try a dress with a draped décolleté that will keep your bust at ease and not constricted. Remember, a plunging neckline will only draw more attention to your bust, while a too-high neckline can still emphasise your bust’s overall shape. Make sure that the cut of the dress emphasises the curve of your waist, too, to balance out your torso and your lower body.

Arms not toned? Go for a cut-out blouse

Not everyone has supermodel-like arms, but that doesn't mean you should skip out on showing off yours. Wear a cut-out blouse with sleeves that fall just a little below your shoulders to inject sexiness into your look, without making you feel conscious about your arms. This will highlight your shoulders more for a chic, subtly sexy look.

Give your booty a boost with textured bottoms

Why go for padded underwear to boost your booty when you can create the same effect au naturel?  Avoid going for tight-hugging bottoms that will further show a flat profile. Instead, if you’ve got nice legs but feel like you need a butt lift, go for a textured pair of shorts like a lace number to create an illusion of a sized up rear.

Cinch that waist with a wide belt

On the road to getting rock hard abs but still not quite there yet? Achieve a similar effect by incorporating a wide belt into your outfit. It gives the illusion of a slimmer waist and an hourglass figure all while making you look more stylish. Imagine an instant tummy tuck without going under the knife!

Next, here's how you can make your outfits look luxe.
