Channel The Pantone Colour Of The Year 2019 With These Beauty Picks | Clozette

Since the year 2000, the Pantone Colour Institute has been revealing a shade that tries to encapsulate the mood and trends of the following year. But it wasn't until around 2015 to 2016 that people really fell in love with the concept of embracing the Pantone colours and their meanings, reigniting the idea of a 'mood board' on a wider scale. And as we bid goodbye to 2018's 'complex and contemplative' Ultra Violet, it has been announced that the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2019 is the vivid and 'life-affirming' Living Coral or Pantone 16-1546.

Hoping to inspire a more humanising, homey and familiar approach to next year's colour aesthetic, we can't help but notice that Living Coral has also been a recurring favourite among beauty lovers even before it made its Pantone debut. So if you know you love your coral shades and its reign in 2019 got you excited, we say channel the essence of the hue through your beauty looks with these inspired picks.

Besides being easily adjustable to most skin colours, a nice coral flush just captures a really natural appeal that works for almost any mood and occasion. And now that the colour is back in the limelight, we say take it one step further and let in shine in new heights — literally! Here's an open secret in the beauty community: most of us find makeover counters intimidating. It doesn't matter if you're a beauty newbie or a veteran, walking into a makeup or skincare store and asking for a consultation or a makeover can be unnerving. Often, we worry that the consultants would make fun of our skin or be pushy with selling us their products. But is it really that daunting?

Clinique outlet at Megamall, Ortigas Center

To find out, we booked a makeup and skincare consultation with Clinique PhilippinesKeep reading to know what happened.

"Before this, I was a makeover counter virgin so I didn't know what to expect. To prepare for it, I went in without makeup — baring my dark spots and all. Despite that, I was still treated to a thorough cleansing, toning and moisturising using products that suit my oily-combination skin. I particularly loved the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (PHP1900/~USD35.93) because it hydrates without leaving a greasy texture.

The first step is to determine your skin type

After all the skincare prep, we moved on to makeup. I asked Reno, the beauty consultant who attended to me, for a natural-looking, everyday makeup look with a little glam. We started the makeover session with him spritzing Moisture Surge Spray (PHP1650/~USD31.20), which I found very cooling and refreshing. Reno also told me that it helps hold the makeup in place. Next, we swatched some foundation and it turns out that my perfect match is the Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer in Cream Beige (PHP2000/~USD37.82). As someone with oily skin, I have an aversion to full coverage foundations because they often look cakey or can clog pores. But I would say that Clinique's Beyond Perfecting is one of the rare exceptions. It's very skin-like but gives a super flawless finish.

Once the base was done, it was sealed with Blended Face Powder (PHP2000/~USD37.82). Then Reno started doing the eye look using several shades of their Lid Pop™ eyeshadows (PHP1100/~USD20.80). I loved how some shades of these eye colours can also double as a highlighter like the Petal Pop, which is my personal favourite. My eye look was topped off with the Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula (PHP1500/~USD28.37). I really adored its volumising but clean finish because I can't stand the clumpy ones.

The final "everyday makeup with a little glam" look

The experience was very enjoyable and it just proved that most of my fears were unwarranted. During the whole consultation, I never felt uncomfortable talking about my skin's imperfections. The exchange was friendly and professional and I walked away with some very useful tips and product recommendations. It's so nice consulting with an expert about things you usually just do on your own like getting the right foundation shade, picking the most complementing eyeshadow hues and more. It's safe to say that I'll be visiting again."

"In contrast to Therese who has oily-combination skin, I have horribly dry-combination skin that gets worse during the latter parts of the year due to the drier air. That was one of my major concerns upon consulting with Clinique Philippines and I was quite delighted that even if we were focusing on their signature three-step basic skincare routine (cleansing, toning, moisturising), there's definitely a difference between the products they used for me as compared with what they used with Therese.

Mine specifically differed on the steps post-cleansing, where the Clarifying Lotion 2 (PHP2300/~USD43.50) was used to tone my skin because it's more targeted to my skin type, ensuring moisture retention throughout the day. Then, it was finished off with the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (PHP1900/~USD35.93), which helps create a dewy finish that still sits well even under makeup and is perfect for drier complexions like mine.

Clinique skincare products for dry-combination skin

As for the makeup consultation, all of the products used on me felt really lightweight and the finish was flawless to the point that I felt like I was going to a photo shoot later that day.

Contour and baking step

When asked about his main focus for conceptualising a look for those consulting in their counters, Reno said that he focuses on the eyes. "It's the thing you look at when you talk to someone so it really needs to pop and say something about the person," he said. It's safe to say that after seeing the differences between my look and Therese's, the approach is definitely as personalised as the skincare consultation.

Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula

If I were to shout out some Clinique makeup products used on me, it would definitely be the Lid Pop™ eyeshadows (PHP1100/~USD20.80) because they give superb glow as a highlighter and the Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula (PHP1500/~USD28.37) because it's one of the best mascaras I've tried so far (and I've tried A LOT because I'm a lush lash junkie).

Amanda's final flawless, glam look

Overall, the experience wasn't intimidating at all and the consultants didn't feel intrusive in any way. In fact, the way they explained things encouraged me to ask more questions that are more personalised for my skin rather than them taking the lead and sounding too technical or mind-boggling for me to figure things out for myself.  They also don't put pressure on you to buy all the things they used on you — you'll surely want to do that yourself when you see the results of your consultation. Take our word for it!"
