Here Are Some Of The Products Makeup Artists Swear By | Clozette

When it comes to beauty products, there are so many options made available for us today that sometimes it’s hard to keep up and choose which ones could actually work for us. There's sensitive, extra-sensitive, best for summer, best for winter, cruelty-free, best for the evening, best for day and a whole lot of other considerations. Our tip? Listen to the experts. So we did our research and even asked some of our favourite makeup artists what makeup products they swear by. Keep reading to know their suggestions.

PrimaVista Long Keep Base

Philippine-based makeup artist Apple Faraon, who has worked with various brands like MAC Cosmetics and has done makeup for personalities like Miss Universe Catriona Gray, said that her all-time fave for keeping the oil at bay is PrimaVista Long Keep Base. "I ask my clients who use this and they say their skin stays matte longer," she said.

NYX Micro Brow Pencil

This drugstore find is actually a favourite and used regularly by makeup artists such as LA-based Bree Stanchfield whose clients include Sarah Gadon and Maria Bello. “You can make the tiniest brow strokes [with this product]! It’s a dupe for a popular Anastasia Beverly Hills pencil, and is just as good,” Stanchfield said in a report.

NARS All Day Luminous Foundation

Archie Vergara, another Philippine-based makeup artist who has done various fashion editorials with beauty queens like Margo Cooper, the current Miss World Bulgaria, said that his favourites include NARS All Day Luminous Foundation because it feels very light on the skin and already offers medium to full coverage. He also swears by using Thayers Toner and the moisturiser from VMV to help prep the skin before doing full makeup.

e.l.f Shine Eraser Blotting Sheets

According to Sienna Gross, an editorial makeup artist, one of the best products she has used to blot unwanted shine of makeup while on set is something you can buy at drugstores: e.l.f Shine Eraser Blotting Sheets.

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick

Melina Ruiz, a makeup artist to the stars like Chrissy Teigen and Keleigh Sperry, said that one of the best yet simple makeup finds you can cop from beauty stores is L’Oreal’s Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick. This liquid lipstick is long-lasting and doesn’t have the cake-like feeling that can be uncomfortable for some.

Last 15 October, Kiehl's Philippines hosted a Thanksgiving event at The Peak in Grand Hyatt Hotel. According to Joan Hwang, Senior Product Manager of Kiehl's, "This event was inspired by the age-old American Thanksgiving tradition." It was an intimate gathering where we were treated to delicious food and homey pastry delights and sweets. Aside from that, we were asked to fill out a lifestyle quiz so we can find out which Kiehl's Power serum we need to help us with our pre-holiday glow up.

Kiehl's Philippines Team

The Kiehl's Philippines Team and the cosy set up at the event

During the luncheon, the Kiehl's Philippines team discussed how our skin can suffer during stressful times like during the holidays. And we agree; whether we admit it or not, the holiday season gives us mixed feelings. Yes, it's a joyous season where families come together to celebrate and long-time friends reunite for a catch-up. But sometimes, the seemingly endless events and preparation cause anxiety and the stress do take a toll on our skin — which is unfortunate as this is the very season when we want to put our best face forward. So what to do? Well, you can always prep your complexion ahead of time.

Kiehl's Power Serums

Enter Kiehl's Power Serums, which we were acquainted (and re-acquainted) with during the event: Midnight Recovery Concentrate (for reducing fine lines, improving texture, and boosting radiance), Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution (hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and acne marks) and Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate (potent anti-ageing and re-texturising). Can this best-selling trio give us the glow up we need for the holidays? Ahead, our impressions on their immediate performance.

On the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution...

"Dressed in a clear dropper-type bottle, the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution gives a sleek and luxurious feel. The product also comes out clear with a distinct floral scent, probably because of peony and white birch extracts in its concoction. As for the texture, it has a slightly slick feel bordering more on watery than oily. I like it better that way since it's more lightweight and not at all tacky to the touch. It dries off nicely and almost invisible, but with the added advantage of leaving the skin soft and supple.

Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution Review

Onto the actual usage, I'm currently using it day and night as advised on their website. Two weeks is a bit too swift to see actual results given that my dark spot problem has been around for ages, but I did get compliments that my skin looked brighter than usual.

I also had a massive zit a couple of days ago on my chin that was bound to become another spot once healed, so I gave it a drop of this product. After two days of doing so, I was actually quite impressed that not only did the pimple dried up and became flat, it also peeled/exfoliated on its own and left me with a smooth skin underneath. They say that partial results can be seen in 12 weeks of usage and with the promising effects I've seen so far, I'm already looking forward to the rest of it.

On Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate...

"On first impression, you can tell that Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate means business. Its no-nonsense box is straightforward — simply showing the product’s formulation, ingredients, and usage. The bottle's design also makes it very easy to use the product. The cap can be twisted to lock or dispense the product, without the risk of getting messy. The pump in the cap also makes it easier to control how much product you’re putting into your hand.

Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate Review

I was particularly excited about the product’s claim that it would immediately make your skin appear smoother and more radiant (in just two weeks!). On the first try, you’ll immediately feel a warm sensation on your skin. At first, I thought it this will sting, but later on, I realised that it’s not actually painful — it's just a bit warm. Given that it has powerful-strength concentrate made of Pure Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid, I take this as a sign that the product is actually working.

Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate Review

Left: Before using the serum; Right: After using Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate for three days

Immediately after applying the product, I noticed that there’s a light shimmer on my skin. It leaves a supple feeling on the face that lasts from morning until late afternoon. I intend to use the product regularly for a few more days to see its lasting effects. But even after using it for just a few days (during morning and night), the immediate effects are already desirable — my complexion is now brighter and even-toned."

On Midnight Recovery Concentrate...

"I've been using Midnight Recovery Concentrate for over a year now, but I still remember the first time I used it. To cut the long story short, it delivered immediate effects. At that time, I was suffering from dehydrated skin; I was a bit too enthusiastic in using chemical exfoliants (at one point, I used it every other day) that it made my skin look leathery. Using a potent facial oil is one of the suggested solutions that was offered to me back then, so I tried the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate.

After just one night, and I'm not kidding at all, my skin's dryness seemed to have been quenched. The bounce came back and my complexion looked brighter. It was all probably thanks to the evening primrose oil with a high content of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids which is reported to improve skin hydration and elasticity. It also has squalane which is great for reviving dehydrated skin. Another thing that I like is how lightweight this facial oil is, it won't make your skin feel suffocated.

Midnight Recovery Concentrate Review

As you can see in the right photo, the consistency is very light

Fast forward to today and it remains a staple in my skincare routine. But there's one thing that I feel could be improved: the packaging. I've travelled with Midnight Recovery Concentrate and it does spill easily (happened to me twice) especially when you're close to finishing it. And since the dropper doesn't go all the way down, it's quite hard to siphon the last few drops. But aside from that, it's a really great facial oil that everyone should give a try."
