Rodarte Skip The Runway, Here's What They Did Instead

It's as whimsical as it can get

After a glorious return to New York Fashion Week for Spring 2019, Rodarte decided to skip the catwalk altogether this season. We can't complain, though, because what they did instead was as magnificent as their signature whimsical runway shows. It involves a surprise celebrity reunion, a super cute puppy and lots of dainty pearls.

Painted or photographed? This surely is the question that will come to mind when one sees the campaign for the atelier's latest designs. Designer duo Laura and Kate Mulleavy unveiled their Spring/Summer 2020 collection through whimsical portraits that are styled to look like paintings. All are taken by photographer Darya Kobayashi Ritch (side note: her Instagram is a haven for quaint aesthetic).

True to the brand's roots of being founded in Los Angeles, this campaign is star-studded, featuring household names like Kirsten Dunst and up-and-coming actresses such as Kiernan Shipka (Sabrina in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Lili Reinhart (Betty in Riverdale). Ahead, our favourites from the bunch.

The most adorable: Lili Reinhart and the puppy

Arguably the most adorable portrait of all is Lili Reinhart's. She's dressed in a voluminous white gown (the perfect choice for brides with a flair for the whimsical) while snuggling with a really cute puppy.

The most majestic: Gabrielle Union looking like Princess Tiana

In this portrait, actress Gabrielle Union is a dead ringer for Princess Tiana from The Princess And The Frog. The pistachio green gown with tulle details matched with those glorious drop earrings are what fairytale dreams are made of!

The most headline-worthy: Mad Men reunion

Four years after its final season, Mad Men stars January Jones and Kiernan Shipka reunited in this Rodarte portrait. The onscreen mother-daughter tandem wore complementary pieces with Jones donning a pale pink silk dress and Shipka sporting a classy tube with floral details.

The prettiest piece: What Helena Howard wore

To us, this piece worn by Helena Howard is signature Rodarte: whimsical, dreamy and ultra-feminine. This oh-so-pretty pale lavender gown is made more beautiful and unique by its multi-coloured tulle detail. We know you're already imagining yourself wearing this.

The most eye-catching: Kirsten Dunst's stunning look

Seeing Kirsten Dunst in a beautiful voluminous gown takes us back to when she played Marie Antoinette in Sofia Coppola's film of the same name. It was the movie that made many ladies want to dress up like an 18th-century royalty. Looking for a modern rendition? This hand-beaded seafoam green gown is your best bet.
