The Beauty Trends We Spotted At Sephora Press Day | Clozette

Every year, we at Clozette look forward to a preview of the latest from Sephora. It’s always exciting to see what innovative new beauty and skincare products we can add to our wish lists and eventually have. Here, we give you a rundown of 2019’s product highlights along with the beauty trends look out for.

Instagrammable Beauty

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea™ Sting Zing Plumping Lip Serum

Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea™ Sting Zing Plumping Lip Serum

Pretty packaging came aplenty at Sephora, what with the rise in popularity of What’s In My Shelf features among Instagram’s beauty-loving clientele. New textures and formulations have also been introduced, such as Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea™ Sting Zing Plumping Lip Serum bedecked cutely with blue jellyfish. The serum contains hot pepper extract, which is known to cause a temporary swelling effect while inducing a natural flush. Stila, on the other hand, made waves by packaging its loose powder in spray form through the In the Buff Powder Spray. The spray promises to blur imperfections while setting and mattifying makeup without making it look dry or cakey. It also comes in a translucent version designed to give a subtle and non-oily glow.

Another welcome addition to Sephora Singapore is Australian brand Dr. Roebuck’s, which promises clean and effective skincare while incorporating ingredients from its home country, such as Kakadu Plum and Tasmanian Water, all wrapped up in minimalist packaging.

Clean Beauty

Indie Lee Clarity Kit

Indie Lee Clarity Kit

The demand for natural skincare continues to increase and Kopari is only too happy to deliver. This San Diego-born beauty and lifestyle brand is formulated with pure, high-quality, cold-pressed coconut oil sourced from small family farms in the Philippines.

Another newcomer to Sephora Singapore is Indie Lee. Indie Lee’s focus is in harnessing the power of natural ingredients coupled with good science to create products that are safe and healthy for the body without scrimping out on effectivity.

Supermodel and entrepreneur Miranda Kerr also launched a new addition to her organic skincare line with the Kora Organics Noni Glow Sleeping Mask, a leave-on gel treatment containing Silver Ear mushroom and Caviar Lime extract to boost the skin’s hydration while calming redness and evening out the skin tone.

Face Oils

Herbivore Botanicals Facial Oils

Herbivore Botanicals Facial Oils

The hype surrounding face oils has yet to die down with cult classic Glamglow adding the Starpotion™ face oil to its line. Containing two types of charcoal (activated charcoal and white Japanese binchotan) and salicylic acid, the face oil promises to detox and purify skin while protecting it from environmental aggressors. Meanwhile, new brand Abysinnian introduced the use of Abysinnian seed oil in its haircare products. The oil is ethically sourced from Africa and claims to nourish and restore hair strands.

Instagram favourite Herbivore Botanicals also came through with full-sized editions of its facial oils: the popular Lapis – Oil Balancing Azulene Facial oil, the Phoenix – Cell Regenerating Rosehip + Chia Facial Oil, and the Orchid – Youth Preserving Jasmine + Camellia Facial Oil.

Expanded Shade Range

Too Faced Pretty Rich Multi-Use Diamond Fire highlighter

In response to the controversy regarding their limited shade range, Tarte launched its Rainforest of the Sea™ water foundation with an impressive 30 shades. This hypoallergenic and vegan foundation is made with a 20% water-based formula and is fortified with marine plant extracts to smooth and soften skin.

Kat Von D’s new Lock-It Powder foundation came with 26 shades of the weightless, pore-perfecting formula that contains rice powder and white kaolin to blur imperfections and create a healthy matte finish.

Too Faced upped its highlighter game by adding two more variants to the original Pretty Rich Multi-Use Diamond Fire highlighter, with Fancy Pink (a peachy blush) and Canary (a sultry golden bronze). Promising to work on any skin tone, the highlighters contain real crushed diamond powder and light-reflecting pearls to give off a megawatt glow.

With the increasing number of stressors found in our environment, Supergoop’s Superscreen Daily Moisturiser Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA+++ is a real gamechanger in that it combines the hydration of a moisturiser with the sun-protection factor of sunscreen. Designed to feel comfortable with its oil-free formula, it also protects against blue light and pollutants.

Crowd favourite Drunk Elephant also launched D-Bronzi™ Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops, which imparts a healthy bronzed glow when added to oils and serums while supporting the skin’s barrier function with its unique blend of fatty acids and antioxidants. Hip skincare brand Saturday Skin adds to the mix with its new Waterfall Glacier Water Cream which contains Alaska Glacier Water that promotes moisture while protecting from free radicals.

Japan-inspired skincare brand Tatcha added the Violet-C brightening serum to its line which boasts of two types of vitamin C to boost antioxidant activity and Japanese Beautyberry to support and stabilise the active ingredients. Peter Thomas Roth’s Potent-C Power Serum claims to have 50x the power of traditional vitamin C blended with vitamin E and ferulic acid to combat signs of ageing. Normally, we would advise against wearing any makeup to the gym. As we all know, exercise makes us sweat and, in the process, pores widen to expel the toxins from the body. The last thing our skin needs is a dense layer of product that can potentially clog those pores and cause problems later on. That being said, sometimes, we just need the added mood boost of a freshly made-up face to keep us going throughout the day. It’s quite the same thing with putting on cute gym wear to psych you up for your workout — a placebo effect if you will. Below are our tips and product recommendations to get your gym face on.

Base: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue™ Tinted Moisturiser – Hydrating Gel Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 + bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue™ Tinted Moisturiser – Hydrating Gel Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30, SGD43.42/~USD32 (; bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder, SGD32.56/~USD24 (

Three things you get from the tinted moisturiser: hydration, light colour-correction and sun protection. When it comes to wearing base makeup to the gym, it’s best to go in with a light hand. The bareMinerals’ award-winning tinted moisturiser promises natural coverage while its clean formula makes it friendlier for your pores. Keep unwanted shine at bay with a light dusting of the talc-free Mineral Veil Finishing Powder.

Spot Correct: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage

A favourite of beauty editors and makeup artists for a reason, the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage concealer promises full, long-wearing coverage for up to eight hours. Capable of withstanding oil and sweat, it's great for spot-correcting any problem areas.

Brows: Glossier Boy Brow

Glossier Boy Brow, SGD21.71/~USD16 (

Step one to pulling your look together under five minutes is doing your brows. Glossier’s lauded Boy Brow gives you fuller, natural-looking brows with its creamy wax formula. Simply brush up and outwards with the wand to keep your brows on fleek.

Lips: RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek Tint

RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek Tint, SGD60/~USD44.22 (

Step two to pulling your look together under five minutes is swiping on some lip colour. Opt for a fresh and hydrating lip tint such as RMS Beauty’s Lip2Cheek Tint, which is formulated with organic and mineral ingredients to give your lips some lovin’. You can also use it on your cheeks, although we recommend you skip this step as working out already gives you a natural flush.

Lashes: Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara

Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara, SGD9.50/~USD7, selected drugstores

Swap heavy eye makeup for a waterproof mascara such as drugstore favourite, Covergirl’s Lash Blast Volume Mascara. This product offers a more defined curl and a bit of volume to brighten up your peepers effortlessly.

Setting Spray: Urban Decay – All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray

All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray, SGD48/~USD35.38 (

For added longevity, set everything in place with the cult favourite Urban Decay – All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray. Specifically formulated for hot and humid situations, this product promises to keep your skin cool enough for your makeup to stay in place.

Pampering yourself after a long period of hectic timelines, stress and overwork is absolutely essential. Here are some interesting and effective ones to try out if you’re in the market for something new.

Geisha Organic

Geisha Organic

This facial features a very special element — nightingale faeces. Weird, we know, but don’t let this deter you from trying out the Geisha Organic Facial at Ikeda Spa Prestige for an experience that dates back to the 17th century, promising brighter and blemish-free skin. The Japanese bush warblers that are bred to provide the raw ingredient are reared in farms and fed a diet of organic berries. It’s really not as gross as it sounds, and we would never lead you astray.

Golki Therapy

Based on Wolff’s law that posits using shock and pressure will stimulate calcium absorption and, ultimately, boost bone density, Yakson Singapore brings us Small Face Care. It is designed to remodel your face and rework your jawline through a series of deep massages. The treatment features an hour-long back, arm and décolletage massage and a 15-minute ‘facial golki’ that promises to make you look as dainty as your favourite Korean star.

Jade Gua Sha

Jade Gua Sha

Tools made from pretty stones such as rose quartz, jade and obsidian have been in the spotlight lately, supposedly able to stimulate the lymph nodes on your face and improve blood circulation. However, these tools have been in use for many years, expertly wielded by therapists trained in the art of facial gua sha. Available at Geranium, the Multivitamin Lifting Treatment features a facial gua sha with a multivitamin treatment massage for a lifting and brightening effect.
