L’Oréal to acquire Japanese skin-care firm Takami Co.
Because of its promising skincare products, it comes as no surprise that beauty conglomerate L’Oréal is to acquire Takami. Although not as prominent in Southeast Asia compared to other popular Japanese beauty brands like Shiseido and Shu Uemura, Takami is a competitive brand that’s famed for their skin peels. We hope this means Takami will soon be more accessible in our area. Takami is just one of the brands that have recently been added to L’Oréal profile. Last year, Thayers Natural Remedies, the producer of the popular Thayers Witch Hazel toner, was also acquired by the powerhouse.

Cicely Tyson passed away at 96
Just days after the launch of her memoir Just As I Am, award-winning actress Cicely Tyson passed away at age 96. She first gained popularity for her role as Rebecca Morgan in Sounder (1972) where she played a woman imprisoned for stealing during the Great Depression in the 1930s. From then on, she played other notable roles in television. Aside from accolades in the film industry, Cicely Tyson was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. It’s an honour awarded to personalities with “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”, according to the White House archives.
Even in her twilight years, Cicely Tyson still continued her career as an actress. She appeared as Constantine in The Help (2011), a period film about Black domestic workers in America. She also had a recurring role as Ophelia Harkness, the mother of the protagonist Annalise, in the popular show How To Get Away With Murder (2014-2020). Even as she leaves this realm, one of her famous quotes will continue to live within us, “Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew.”
