I Stopped Using A Facial Cleanser For A Week, This Is What Happened | Clozette

How hard can it be? That's the first thing that came to mind when I was challenged to try this beauty experiment. The thing is, I only started getting serious about my skincare a couple of years ago and I've never really given much thought as to how omitting this significant part of my routine would change the way I do things. This is only in consideration of the fact that my skincare routine is dynamic at best, with me trying to change up products and methods once I feel like my skin has grown immune to a certain way of doing things.

However, one thing that I actually forgot to consider is my long relationship with cleansers in the first place. Ever since I was nine years old, at the brink of puberty and the beginning of my 'problematic skin' era, cleansers were the skin care products I used without even knowing what skincare was. The idea of cleaning your skin with a product containing 'acne fighting beads' and 'anti-acne properties' was so appealing to my pubescent self that it sort of continued on to the present, especially now that I know the importance of proper cleansing post-makeup and pre-skincare ritual.

So how exactly did I deal with a week of no cleansers? Read on to find out.

My current cleanser stash

So far, I have at least eight cleansers that I use in turns, with some of my most favourites in the photo below. Most of my cleansers are either from local organic brands like Human Nature and the rest are from Japanese brands like Senka, FANCL, Kose and Rosette. I find that these deliver the best results when it comes to dealing with dirt, keeping the skin moisturised — plus, they have skin-nourishing benefits and they don't make you break the bank.

The five-day experience

For five days in a row, I only relied on reverting back to good ol' beauty soaps for my cleansing routine. At first, I thought, "How bad can it be?" That is until I actually got into it.

I'm a pretty heavy makeup user and giving up my oil cleansers really took a toll on how harsh I have to be to make sure my skin was clean enough. And even if I really took my time in cleansing using soaps, I still found traces of makeup clinging onto my cotton pads while I'm toning. Given this, I had to adjust my makeup routine to a bare minimum — meaning no eye makeup, skin tints over foundations, and definitely no cheek and lip tints — to make sure that I wouldn't put much toll on my skin when the time to remove the products came.

I also felt like my serums were not working as well considering how dry and dull my skin got from cleansing with soaps. It just felt flat and not even supple to the touch, losing that refreshed glow I usually have whenever I'm finished cleansing with proper cleansers. Thankfully, even though I have sensitive skin, the change in the routine didn't really cause me massive breakouts.

Final thoughts

I must say that after this experiment, I realised how much I missed using cleansers and why they are so important when it comes to one's skincare. Just like having a good base to your makeup, cleansing properly and effectively serves as the foundation for your skincare routine and prepping your skin with a reliable cleanser really changes the way products work their magic. Not to mention the iffy feeling of not being able to take off all the gunk away from your pores after a long hard day. After five days of shelving my beloved cleansers, I'm glad to have them back!

P.S. We battled out some cleansers to see which one would come out on top!
